The 3 Biggest Strength Training Mistakes Women Make

(That Have Nothing to Do With Effort)

Most women don’t struggle with effort.

They show up.
They try.
They push themselves.

But effort alone isn’t what builds strength.

Direction does.

When I first started lifting weights, I thought I just needed to work harder.

Lift heavier.
Move faster.
Do more.

But looking back, I wasn’t doing it wrong because I didn’t care.

I was doing it wrong because I didn’t know what actually works.

Effort matters.
But direction is what gets results.

Mistake #1: Going Too Heavy, Too Soon

When I first started lifting, I didn’t want to touch a 5-pound dumbbell again.

I wanted to feel strong.

So I jumped to heavier weights quickly—before I had really mastered the movements.

And what happened?

I wasn’t actually getting stronger.

Because I wasn’t doing the exercises correctly.

Strength isn’t built by rushing to heavier weights.

It’s built by:

  • Learning the movement
  • Controlling the weight
  • Building proper form

Then progressing.

Slowing down isn’t weakness.

It’s how you build real strength.

Mistake #2: Believing the “Bulk” Myth (and Getting Impatient)

This one is everywhere.

The fear that lifting weights will make you bulky.

It kept me from even wanting to try.

And I see it all the time with other women too.

At the same time, there’s another issue:

Switching workouts too quickly.

Trying one plan…
Not seeing results fast enough…
Jumping to something else.

Strength doesn’t work like that.

It takes time.

Consistency.

Repetition.

You don’t accidentally become bulky.

But you can accidentally stay stuck…

If you never give anything enough time to work.

Mistake #3: Not Resting Enough

This one is easy to miss.

Because it feels like you’re doing the right thing.

You start lifting…
You feel motivated…
And suddenly you think:

“I should be doing this every day.”

But your body doesn’t build strength during the workout.

It builds strength after.

Muscles need time to recover.

To rebuild.
To adapt.

Without that?

You don’t get stronger.

You get tired.

Or worse—injured.

Rest isn’t a setback.

It’s part of the process.

What Actually Works

When you step back and look at it, strength training isn’t complicated.

But it does require a shift in mindset.

If you’re starting (or starting again), think of it as a reset.

Not just physically—but mentally.

Focus on:

  • Consistency over intensity
  • Progression over ego
  • Recovery as part of the plan

Challenge yourself…

But don’t overwork yourself.

Give your body the time it needs to adapt.

And trust that the process is working—even when it’s not instant.

Train Like a Grown-Up

Grown-ups don’t rush the process.

They build it.

They learn the movements.
They stay consistent.
They respect recovery.

They don’t chase quick results.

They build lasting ones.

The Kahuna Standard

Strength isn’t about doing more.

It’s about doing it right.
