Why You Keep Starting Over (And How to Finally Break the Cycle)

For years, I lived in a cycle.

Start strong.
Do really well.
Then slowly fall off.

And repeat.

You don’t need a fresh start.
You need a better way to continue.

What My “Starting Over” Actually Looked Like

I would go through this cycle about three times a year.

One of the most vivid examples?

Training for my half marathon.

On Christmas Day 2024, I decided to test myself.

I told myself:
If I can run three miles—no matter how slow—I’ll sign up.

So I went out and ran.

No pressure on pace.
No expectation other than to keep going.

And somehow…

I did it.

Three miles. No walking.

That was it.

I signed up.
Committed.
Told people.
Built a plan.

For 12 weeks, I showed up.

Running.
Working out.
Learning what I needed along the way.

And on April 12th…

I crossed that finish line.

It was one of the best moments of my life.

And Then… I Stopped

Because real life came back.

I couldn’t keep that pace.

My business had taken a hit.
I hadn’t been as present with my family as I wanted to be.

So I took a break.

And that break?

Turned into weeks.
Then months.

Until I tried to jump back in…

And injured my quad.

This Is the Cycle No One Talks About

It’s not that we don’t know how to work hard.

We do.

We can commit.
We can push.
We can follow a plan.

The problem is…

We build routines that don’t fit our real life.

Why We Keep Starting Over

For me, it usually came from a feeling.

Guilt.
Discomfort.
Looking in the mirror or at photos and thinking:

“I need to fix this.”

So I would start again.

New plan.
New goal.
New motivation.

And for a couple weeks?

It felt great.

Until it didn’t.

What Starting Over Actually Feels Like

It’s exhausting.

You feel behind.
You feel frustrated.
You feel like you’re constantly trying to get back to where you were.

And every time you restart…

It feels like you’re starting from scratch.

The Shift That’s Changing Everything

I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to say I’ve completely broken the cycle.

But I do know this:

I’m not living in it the same way anymore.

Because now, I focus on something different.

What I Do Instead

I don’t try to make up for missed time.

I don’t double up workouts.
I don’t punish myself.

I just do the next thing.

Miss a workout?

Do the next scheduled one.

That’s it.

Because trying to “catch up” is what leads to burnout…

Or injury.

(Both of which I’ve done.)

What Actually Helps Me Stay Consistent

  • Shorter, more sustainable workouts
  • Protein-first meals
  • Monthly meal planning
  • Simple routines I can repeat

And most importantly:

Letting go of perfection.

This Is the Real Goal

Not a perfect streak.

Not an all-or-nothing transformation.

But showing up again…
And again…
And again.

Even after you fall off.

Train Like a Grown-Up

Grown-ups don’t start over.

They keep going.

They adjust.
They simplify.
They pick back up where they are—not where they think they should be.

The Kahuna Standard

You don’t need a fresh start.

You need a better way to continue.
