You Don’t Need More Motivation — You Need a Standard
Why Routines Beat Willpower Every Time
There’s a version of me that thinks I’ll work out after 5:00 PM.
That version is very optimistic.
Because in reality?
After 5:00 PM… I’m a hot mess.
I’m tired.
I’m overstimulated.
I’m coming off a full day of work, kids, decisions, and noise.
The idea of starting a workout at that point feels almost impossible.
And for a long time, I thought that meant something was wrong with me.
Motivation is unreliable.
A standard is not.
The Motivation Lie
We’re told that if we were just more motivated, we’d stay consistent.
We’d:
- Work out every day
- Eat perfectly
- Stick to the plan
And when we don’t?
We assume it’s a discipline problem.
But here’s the truth I had to learn the hard way:
Motivation is unreliable.
Not just for you. For everyone.
It comes and goes depending on:
- Your energy
- Your stress
- Your sleep
- Your environment
Expecting yourself to feel motivated every day isn’t realistic.
It’s setting yourself up to fail.
What Actually Happens After 5:00 PM
This is where everything used to fall apart.
This is when I would:
- Skip workouts
- Make poor food decisions
- Lose patience
- Start negotiating with myself
And once that spiral started, it was hard to stop.
Not because I didn’t care.
Because I was exhausted.
The Shift: No More Audibles
One of the biggest changes I’ve made is this:
There are no audibles after 5:00 PM.
No last-minute decisions.
No “what should I do?”
No negotiating with myself.
Only routines.
Dinner is already planned.
The groceries are already bought.
The decision has already been made.
Because I know that version of me at 5:30 PM isn’t thinking clearly.
And she shouldn’t be the one in charge.

I stopped trying to fix my motivation.
And started building systems that work without it.
For me, that looks like:
- Morning workouts
- Protein-first meals
- Pre-planned dinners
Simple.
Repeatable.
Reliable.
I don’t wake up motivated every day.
But I don’t need to.
Because the decision is already made.
This Isn’t About Perfection
There are still hard days.
There are still moments where I feel overwhelmed.
But I don’t rely on how I feel anymore.
I rely on what I’ve already decided.
That’s the difference.
You Don’t Need More Motivation
You need fewer decisions.
You need structure that supports you when your energy is low.
You need routines that carry you through the parts of the day where you’re most likely to fall off.
Because that’s where consistency is actually built.
Not when everything is going well.
But when it’s not.
Build a Standard You Can Live With
If you’ve been telling yourself:
“I just need to be more motivated…”
I want you to know this:
It’s not a you problem.
It’s a system problem.
Motivation will come and go.
But a standard? That stays.
Train Like a Grown-Up
Grown-ups don’t rely on motivation.
They build routines that make good decisions easier.
They remove friction.
They plan ahead.
They protect their energy.
Not because they’re perfect.
Because they’re realistic.
That’s how you stay consistent.
That’s how you build strength.
That’s The Kahuna Standard.
