You’re Not Out of Shape — You’re Under-Recovered

Why Doing More Isn’t Always the Answer

There are seasons of life where everything feels like a lot.

Work picks up.
Schedules get full.
Kids need more.
Life just… stacks.

And during those times?

You don’t always feel “out of shape.”

Not until you try to get back into your routine.

You’re not out of shape.
You’re under-recovered.

The Moment It Hits

You go back to working out.

And suddenly…

Everything feels harder than it should.

You’re more tired.
More sore.
More drained than expected.

And your first thought is usually:

“I’m so out of shape.”

What I Used to Believe

Whenever I hit one of these seasons, I would get down on myself.

I would think:

“If I hadn’t stopped, I wouldn’t be here.”

So what would I do?

Push harder.

Try to make up for lost time.
Work out more.
Go longer.
Go faster.

Because I thought the solution was effort.

What Was Actually Happening

It wasn’t that I was out of shape.

It was that I was under-recovered.

I was coming off:

  • High stress
  • Busy days
  • Mental overload

And then asking my body to perform at full capacity…

Without giving it time to reset.

That’s not a discipline issue.

That’s a recovery issue.

The Problem With “Catching Up”

Trying to catch up sounds productive.

But it usually leads to:

  • More soreness
  • More fatigue
  • More frustration

And sometimes?

Injury.

(I learned that one the hard way.)

Because your body doesn’t respond well to pressure.

It responds to consistency.

What Changed for Me

I stopped trying to make up for lost time.

And started focusing on what I needed right now.

That meant:

  • Shorter workouts
  • Better pacing
  • More intentional rest

And trusting that easing back in wasn’t falling behind…

It was building something sustainable.

What Happens When You Prioritize Recovery

Everything starts to feel different.

Your workouts improve.
You’re less sore.
You have more energy.
You stay consistent longer.

And instead of constantly restarting…

You keep going.

The Truth About Recovery

Rest isn’t wasted time.

It’s necessary time.

Time your body uses to:

  • Rebuild
  • Reset
  • Get stronger

Without it?

You’re not progressing.

You’re just pushing.

Train Like a Grown-Up

Grown-ups don’t ignore recovery.

They build it into the plan.

They don’t try to catch up.

They move forward—at a pace that actually works.

The Kahuna Standard

You’re not behind.

You just need to recover.
